Yesterday, my friend Jonathon Zabel-Lloyd was singing “Higher Lover,” a song made famous by Steve Winwood in 1986. He told me, “Whitney Houston has a new dance song; a cover of “Higher Love” with Kygo.” I LOVE Whitney and could not wait to listen. When we got in my car, I googled it and played the song via Youtube on full blast. I was instantly uplifted! Whitney recorded the song in 1990 to be released on her third album I’m Your Baby Tonight. “Higher Love” was scrapped and released only in Japan as a bonus track.
As reported in Rolling Stone, “Sister-in-law Pat Houston, who doubles as the sole executor of Whitney’s estate said, “Higher Love” felt like a particularly timely release.” She added, “The current cultural environment has been thirsty for something uplifting and inspiring.” “Kygo was the first person that was mentioned. He put his spin on it and did a fantastic job.”
I couldn’t agree more. With so much darkness and conflict in our world. Music has the power to unite a nation. If anyone can do it – it’s Whitney Houston. On “Higher Love,” Whitney shines a light from heaven taking us to church and dance floor. Her angelic voice reminds us to look inside our hearts and of the higher power in a sometimes cruel world. “Higher Love,” entered the Billboard Hot 100 at #63 and is currently #1 on the Dance Club Chart. Check it out!
