Ian Ziering Is Kicking Ass For The Greater Good

We all remember Ian Ziering starring as Steve Sanders on the iconic 90’s teen drama, Beverly Hills 90210. 25 yrs later, Ian is enjoying a resurgence that started when he danced his way back into American homes on Dancing With The Stars in 2007. At the age of 49, Ian became a Las Vegas headliner at Chippendales when he joined as celebrity guest host. Ian was asked to return to the show in Summer 2014 for another sold-out run. He also appeared on the recent season of Celebrity Apprentice.

Most memorably, he starred in the small-budget SyFy Channel film Sharknado that became an instant science fiction cult classic that even received a theatrical release in movie theaters around the world. The following year, he reprised the role of Fin Shepard in Sharknado 2: The Second One. The third installment, Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! premieres July 22 on SyFy.

I had the opportunity of interviewing Ian and what I discovered was an extremely thoughtful, intelligent and sensitive man. I was a bit nervous but Ian put me as ease with his enthusiasm…

I had a bit of a crazy morning but I’m settling in now. Thank you for taking the time to talk. Let’s get started if that’s OK with you?

With another Sharknado installment on the way, what can fans expect from Part 3?

We haven’t changed the formula, its still sharks in tornadoes but we changed the background. We’re not in New York this time, we’re gonna be in Washington D.C. and the storm takes us all the way down to Orlando, Florida. It’s a family movie. It’s about a guy that will do anything to keep his family safe. It’s going to be out of this world – and that’s a huge hint for ya!

It looks like it would be a really fun movie to make.

It’s a lot of fun! There are more cameos. There will be a lot of surprises. It was not only fun to make but also to watch.

From the moment of receiving the script for the first film to now did you ever imagine it would develop into this wildly popular franchise?

No, I could have never have imagined this. The secret sauce that makes Skarknado special is elusive. Major studios spend tons of money trying to generate this type of buzz.

Your character Fin is notorious for saving lives with a Chainsaw. You started an apparel brand ChainsawBrands.com that plays off that theme with the intent of spreading light and positive actions thought the world. Please explain.

The chainsaw to me, in my character development, is a tool used to overcome obstacles to breakthrough to the next level, to achieve something greater. Well, I want to die young, but late in life. Eating right, exercising and taking care of myself is the key to having the best chance of accomplishing that. You have to be accountable and set a goal. Accountability keeps you focused, using things like a vision board is incredibly useful. I work out five days a week, its hard work but I want to stay sexy naked as long as possible. I don’t get any complaints from my wife (laughs). I also have a two year old and a four year old; I want to dance at their weddings. It’s not just about me anymore.

You and your wife, Erin, attended LA Pride with your daughters this year (which is amazing)! My father would not have done such a thing. What do you hope your children will learn from their early exposure to the LGBT community?

Ya know what, love really conquers all. It’s the most motivating force in the universe and it’s not gender specific. I’m sorry to hear your father was not supportive. But you can’t blame him, he’s from a different generation where it was not as acceptable. But that’s changing. I want my kids to know we are all the same, that what really counts is the type of person you are and how you treat others. No one should have a say on who anyone wants to love or be with. In this day and age, love is difficult to find. If you find true love, God bless you. I’m teaching my kids to do their thing. Everyone has to do their thing.

I’m like that with my niece and nephew. I’ve never tried to conceal who I am. They accept me as I am. Over the years, I’ve seen major change happen and I hope we keep moving in that direction.

You can’t stop it – it’s natural, it’s a natural evolution and progression.

Lisa Loeb On Her Big Break, Boys and Bowie

In 1994, grunge music was popular and so was an emerging group of female singer songwriters. Lisa Loeb was front and center. The Grammy® nominated artist started her career with the platinum-selling Number 1 hit song “Stay (I Missed You)” from the film Reality Bites. She enjoyed further success with hit songs like “Do You Sleep?” and “I Do” just to name a few.

“Stay” brings me back to my youth, invoking the feeling of wanting to make my place in the world. Lisa will always be special to me. We became friends on Twitter (post modernism at its best) and bonded over our cats. I asked Lisa, if I could interview her; she agreed. Here’s what she had to say ….

Hi Lisa, legend has it, Ethan Hawke discovered you while performing in a coffee shop. He would later play “Stay” to Ben Stiller, long story short “Stay” was included in the film Reality Bites and boom instant stardom. How much of this is true?

Ethan and I met in NYC after I graduated from Brown University through a friend we had in common. A group of actors, musicians, writers, and other creative types used to hang out together, and all supported each other. I wrote music for Ethan’s theater company too. Ethan asked for a recording of my song “Stay” to pass along to Ben Stiller and the other folks involved in placing music in the film Reality Bites. Ethan conceived and directed the one take video for the song as well.

“Stay” and Reality Bites spoke to a generation who was told they would amount to nothing. As it turns out, many of us are doing just fine. How were you able adapt to the pressures of fame and continue on a road of success?

Having a great support system, made up of my family and friends just keeps everything grounded. And I was just raised that way. I kept working hard, making music and doing projects that mean something to me, and try to balance my personal and business life.

Your music and styling has stayed true to who you are. Was there ever any pressure to “sex it up” or change your musical styling venturing into dance or pop like other artist have?

People have never pressured me to be like other artists, although I’m always looking to explore different styles and approaches. I haven’t gotten too far outside myself, but there’s always another song and another recording.

Your album titles “Tails” & “Hello Lisa” (which is a play on Hello Kitty) and let’s not forget your signature eyeglasses all pay tribute to the feline. Have you always been a cat person? What’s the obsession?

I love cats. I don’t know. They’re cute. They’re soft. They’re mysterious. I’m just a cat person. 😻

Next question, what music do you listen to? What gets you going?

I listen to everything from Queen to Sufjian Stevens, David Bowie to Elton John. Lots of classic rock and singer songwriters from the 1970’s radio. Also, my husband works with a lot of newer bands, so I’m usually pretty up to date with some idea of what’s going on.

You have also built an impressive resume as an actress? What do you enjoy more, singing or acting?

It’s really my dream to be able to play a character in a great story on film, but singing definitely comes more naturally to me. I love singing in front of an audience- there’s a special connection that comes from a live performance.

Your nonprofit Camp Lisa helps kids attend summer camp, what inspired you to start this amazing organization?

I wanted to share the summer camp experience with kids who wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to go to camp. A kid can learn a lot about themselves, have fun, become a great leader, member of the community, challenge themselves by trying something they’ve never done before. It’s an amazing experience that resonates through your entire life. How could I not share that?!

In 2006, you appeared on E! Entertainment Network’s No. 1 Single which documented your journey to find love. You have since married and are now a mother of two. What advice do you have for those reading who are still looking for their soul mate?

Read the book, “If the Buddha Dated” by Charlotte Kasl. Focus on what you want. Not what everyone else expects from you. And then if it’s a priority for you to meet someone, make it a priority in your schedule and your life if you have that kind of flexibility in your schedule. Focus. Relax. Make it a priority.

Work wise and on a personal level, what’s up next for Lisa Loeb?

I’m touring, making tons of new grownup songs, a new kids’ project, getting the camp musical I collaborated on, Camp Kappawanna, on the road, and we’ll see what’s next. That’s a lot. Believe me.

Sally Jessy Raphael: The People’s Queen

Some of my most fond memories are the days where I would come home from school and watch daytime television. I’d start off by watching soaps like Days of Our Lives, then as the afternoon progressed, I’d immerse myself into daytime talk shows. This was a simpler time, which predates the internet (you do the math)! Daytime talk provided an arena for debate, education and hours of entertainment with unusual guests and celebrities. The Sally Jessy Raphael Show, later shortened to Sally, was the first to challenge Phil Donahue’s rule over the daytime talk world.

Sally known for her trademark red glasses, aired from 1983-2002. She was soft spoken and relatable, but would also ask the tough questions. The landscape of television has changed dramatically over the years and I will always hold those afternoons with Sally close to my heart. Since I can’t go back in time, I thought it would be fun to track Sally down and pick her brain about the good old days, what she’s up to now and more…

Sally, in preparing for this interview, I jumped on YouTube to watch clips of your show. It made me really appreciate and miss daytime talk shows. There was an intimacy about them that you really can’t find these days. Is there anything on air you feel comes close?

No. I honestly don’t see any intimacy on daytime TV now. It’s all filled with gimmicks and trying to be fun. On that note, I do love Wendy Williams. She is fun and was very gracious when I was on her show a few years ago.

Talk shows, did just that…they invoked thought and conversation into American homes – was it your goal to encourage dialog and social change?

Absolutely. We wanted to get people talking about issues that no one had ever talked about before, and I feel that we reached that goal – whether it was teen pregnancy, religion, being transgender, adultery or even female impersonators. I’m very proud of the issue-oriented shows we did back in the day. Well, most of them!

In 1989, you won the Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show. What does it feel like beating Oprah?

Well the Oprah we all know & love today was not that Oprah back in 1989. She had only been on the air for a few years, and we all knew (including Phil) that she was going to be a major force in American culture, but Phil & I were already the old pros at that point. So I was elated and extremely grateful for the honor, but I wasn’t thinking about it in terms of “beating Oprah”!

Be honest, who was your best guest and worst guest?

By far, my best guest was Audrey Hepburn. She appeared on our show only a few months before she passed and was grace personified. When you look at some of the worst guests, well of course, there were some loud-mouthed teens, domineering husbands, racists, etc. But celebrity-wise, it would have to be Woody Allen. He flat out smelled. Maybe I shouldn’t say that?

As more and more talk shows flooded the air waves in the 1990’s and topics became more sensational, did it bother you?

Yes it did bother me, but we all fell victim to it to keep our shows on the air – and as you know, sometimes you have to do whatever it takes to stay afloat in this business and keep the hundreds of employees on your staff working.

I do love my drag queens, hunty! But I also love CBS Sunday Morning…that is still one of the best shows on TV now. And of course I also enjoy Scandal, Girls, Downton Abbey, Orange Is The New Black – there are so many! Clever writing is key!

If you were on The Real Housewives, what city would you choose and what would be your tag line?

Well first of all, I would never appear on one of those shows. I know it’s America’s guilty pleasure, but they’re garbage. Instead, I would rather start my own show in the little town where I have a house in upstate New York called Pawling. And our tagline would be “These Housewives are truly A-Pawling”. : )

Being that it is Pride month, what would you like to say to your LGBTQ fans?

I’d say “You’ve come a long way baby!” Especially in the last few years!! I was just talking about how far trans issues have come recently, and I have to credit social media and the Internet in general.
