Thursday night my friend invited me to see music legend Nile Rogers speak and sign copies of his new book Le Freak at Barnes and Noble in Union Square. I knew Nile Rogers as being the man behind Madonna’s hits “Material Girl” and “Like a Virgin” but had no idea the influence he had on music as a whole and all the great artist he has written or produced for. Rogers a guitarist, born in NYC formed the The Big Apple Band and in 1973 opened up for the Jackson 5! Later he formed the band Chic and was responsible for the dance anthems “Le Freak” and “Good Times”…..then came “We Are Family” for Sister Sledge and “I’m Coming Out” and “Upside Down” by Diana Ross. Wow, impressive! When Rogers presented Diana with the track “I’m Coming Out,” she told him that she couldn’t record the song because she wasn’t gay. Rogers joked saying it was the only time he lied to an artist….telling her the song was not about coming out as gay. He told her it would be a great way to open her stage shows. Lol. Well we all know what happened, the song climbed up the charts and became a huge gay anthem. Rogers also noted that he is an insomniac and the only person who could keep up with his late night sessions was Madonna. I’m not surprised! Rogers also went on to work with David Bowie, penning the hits “China Girl” and “Let’s Dance”….he also worked with Duran Duran, Grace Jones, Cyndi Lauper, Sheena Easton and Mick Jagger… just to name a few. In 2010, Rogers was diagnosed with cancer and is waiting on test results to see if he is still in remission. He said that everyday is different, some are very difficult but he was so happy so many people showed up to support him. He greeted me with the brightest smile and I was honored to meet such a legend. Thank u Leda and Rebecca for the amazing night!!
