I love horror movies but I’m a bit on the fence about Guillermo del Toro’s, “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark”. Architect Alex Hurst (Guy Pearce) and his new girlfriend Kim (Katie Holmes) move into a big scary house and from the opening scene you learn that something VERY disturbing happened there in years past. Enter Sally, Alex’s pill popping, 8yr daughter from a previous relationship. She is clearly going through emotional problems and comes to live with the couple to sort things out. Little Sally does not take well to the move and is not too pleased with Dad’s new girlfriend. Sally remarks, “Mom said, you left her because Kim is young, well she’s not that young, she’s old“. As the family get settled, they are warned by a caretaker that the house is not safe for a child but they ignore the warning and many others from poor Sally who is lured to the basement only to a discover a gateway into an underworld. Something is in the basement and whatever it is wants to play with Sally but only in the dark. The film takes a turn from horror into a world of fantasy, when the story behind the creatures in the basement are revealed. Now, if only anyone would believe Sally they just might survive. Overall, there are few jump out of your seat moments. The film is more creepy then scary, the ending is kind of a let down and film does not live up to del Toro’s “Orphanage”. I would still recommend seeing this but I’m more curious about the original 1973, ABC made for TV movie for which “Dark” is based.
