In 2018, actor Johnathon Schaech revealed in People, he was the victim of sexual of abuse at age 22 by film director Franco Zeffirelli. It was a secret he held on to for 25 years. The trauma brought feelings of shame; Schaech turned to alcohol, drugs, and sex to cope. “It caused my whole world to be confused for a long time. I carried this shame all along, I thought it was just part of who I was. I did things I could never imagine myself doing.” He chose to disclose the abuse for his son and “for the future of all our kids.” “We have to stop it. Stop the evil. That’s why I wanted to talk. I want future generations to know they’re not alone.”
Since coming out with his #MeToo story, Johanthon has become a vocal advocate on the subject. Through social media, his participation with the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements, and his involvement with RAINN (The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) and SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests), a support group for women and men wounded by religious and institutional authorities. He’s become a leading voice for survivors.
I connected with Johnathon about four years ago on social media, and have met him in person; I consider him a friend. He’s been encouraging in my pursuit of acting. And inspired me to share a #MeToo moment of my own involving a former boss who exposed himself to me. Another example of a powerful man using his position to abuse others. At the time, I was humiliated and didn’t tell a soul. Mainly, because the man was protected by enablers only concerned with profit and let alone my safety. I knew nothing would happen, and I would be the one punished. I really needed the job, so I kept quiet. When I shared my story with Johnathon, he was supportive and directed me to resources and reading materials. He also encouraged me to “share what happened with someone in person, someone empathetic, caring, and wise.” Johnathon Schaech is a man who cares, someone who wants to make a difference in the world. It’s part of his survival story and I assume healing process.
