The Thing

I am not sure how many of you are old enough to remember John Carpenter’s original version of The Thing? It came out in 1982 and if my memory serves me correct, I watched it with my family on a VHS player! I forget about the film until I saw the trailer for the remake. The Thing (2011) serves as a prequel to John Carpenter’s masterpiece but like the saying goes “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.”  It’s not that the new film is bad, I think first timers will enjoy it but for me the film failed to live up to original. The premise is the same….a group of scientist find a space ship in a cold and isolated region and beneath the ice lies a frozen Alien. The scientist make the discovery of a lifetime and pull The Thing out for a round of experiments. When the ice melts The Thing is alive but can not survive in the cold conditions. It needs somewhere to hide and what better place is there than the human body? The Thing lives among the scientist and will reveal it’s self when it is ready to kill and occupy it’s next host. In this latest version, there are plenty of cheap thrills but you don’t feel the paranoia and fear among the scientist which made the original a physiological thriller in addition to your typical horror flick. I wouldn’t rush out and go see this if you are familiar with the original but if you are not then by all means go see it.
